Artist Spotlight: Anna Weston
This past weekend I flew to Brisbane to attend an honours graduation exhibition at the Queensland College of Art and Design. The artist was my friend, Anna Weston, and it was special to be there in person to support her and see the work presented in a thoughtful space.
Anna and I met in Fernie over a decade ago. We were both living there at the same time, and we became friends in that easy way where creativity finds familiarity. Life took us in different directions. Anna moved back to Australia and I returned to New Zealand. We have stayed in touch over the years, checking in, sharing small creative milestones, and encouraging each other through the seasons.
Her exhibition, titled What She Said, explores women's embodied agency. It looks closely at the ways women express, speak, act, and move through the world. For this project, Anna interviewed eight women over Zoom about how they experience agency in their own lives. I was one of the eight. Being part of that conversation felt reflective and grounding. Having someone listen with such care is memorable.
From those interviews, Anna painted each woman mid-communication, capturing gesture, expression, and the subtle shifts that happen when thoughts are forming. The paintings hold movement and presence, as if the dialogue is still unfolding. A small monitor in the gallery played portions of the original interviews, connecting the painted expressions back to real voices.
I stayed with my cousin while I was there, and before the exhibition we met up with Anna, her partner, and her parents for dinner. It was warm and easy and helped the night feel connected. Being able to see the work after sharing that time together added something personal to the experience.
It has been meaningful to watch Anna continue to develop her art practice over the years. Seeing her take this step, study deeply, and create a body of work with such intention felt really good.
It was a short trip, just one night, but full in the right ways. A reminder that creative friendships can span place and time, and that showing up in person can matter more than the length of the visit.
You can view Anna’s artwork from this exhibition at annaweston.com.au/whatshesaid

✨ Meet Our Spooky Sidekicks
Education Starts at Home
Created by Ella, an early childhood teacher and mum, Education Starts at Home was born from her passion for making meaningful learning experiences easy for parents. While on maternity leave, she realised how hard it can be to find simple, educationally backed tools to support children’s development at home, so she designed her Learn With Me cards to empower parents and make learning through play fun and stress-free.
Mud Mates
Based in Hawke’s Bay, Alana is the clever mum behind Mud Mates. After one too many muddy adventures and a mountain of washing, she dreamed up a way for kids to play freely while saving parents time and clothes. For over 13 years she’s been handcrafting durable, high-quality gear that keeps little explorers dry, comfy, and ready for adventure.
Slime Minister
And of course, from our own slime lab comes the spooky fun itself. Think limited-edition Halloween slimes, a mix of spooky and sweet, perfect for sensory seekers who love all things squishy and satisfying.
Together, we’ve created the ultimate Halloween prize pack filled with magical learning, creative play, and sensory goodness. There are slimes, potions, and mess-free adventures waiting to be discovered!

Trick or Treat: Spooky or Sweet? 👻🎃
This Halloween, we’re serving up something extra special for slime lovers. Meet our brand-new range: Trick or Treat: Spooky or Sweet. Two limited-edition slimes, two very different personalities. The question is… which side will you choose?
🎃 Sweet: Pumpkin Spice Latte
Pumpkin spice might be a very North American obsession, but we’ve brewed up our own Kiwi version just for Halloween. Our Pumpkin Spice Latte slime is smooth, stretchy, and oh-so-satisfying with its soft matte clay texture. The scent is a cosy mix of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a sprinkle of allspice. It’s warm, comforting, and smells just like a hug in slime form.
The colour is a creamy, golden orange and it comes with creamy cutesy beads that give an irresistible sensory pop. This one’s definitely the “treat” in our range.
🖤 Spooky: Black Magic Potion
If sweet isn’t your thing, you might be tempted by the dark side. Black Magic Potion is our mysterious, matte black clay slime with a fizzy, clean scent that has a hint of cola. Officially, it’s a secret mix of smoky sweetness, soapy freshness, and patchouli. Unofficially, it’s the one that makes you go “wait… why am I suddenly craving a cola?”
Inside the tub you’ll find black, orange, and white beads, plus the occasional eyeball and enchanted alphabet beads to give it that extra spooky flair. It’s stretchy, clicky, and full of Halloween mischief. Definitely the “trick” of the pair.
Which Will You Choose?
Whether you’re a “spooky” soul or a “sweet” seeker, our Halloween duo is designed to make playtime magical. Both slimes come in jumbo tubs, packed with sensory fun that’s perfect for stretching, squishing, and swirling all season long.
But just like Halloween night, these won’t last forever. We only have limited numbers available while stocks last. Click below to grab your tub of Pumpkin Spice Latte or Black Magic Potion before they vanish into the night…
Let’s Talk Texture: Why Slime Feels So Good
Discover the magic behind slime textures and why they feel so satisfying. From smooth butter slime to thick and glossy to icing snow-like slime, learn how different textures help with focus, calm, and sensory play for all ages.
There’s something instantly satisfying about sinking your fingers into a good slime. Whether it’s a soft swirl, a juicy stretch, or a slow, crunchy pull, texture is everything. And it turns out, there’s science and sensory magic behind that feeling.
At Slime Minister, we’re big believers in the power of texture. Not just for fun, but for focus, calm, and emotional regulation. This can be especially powerful for neurodivergent kids and families who thrive on sensory input that feels just right.
✋ What makes slime textures so satisfying?
Different textures speak to different sensory needs. Here's a quick breakdown of what we offer in our current slime ranges:
Butter slime (OG Slime Line)
Smooth and soft, perfect for stretching and sculpting. This one’s ideal for slow, calming play.
Icing slime (Ube Squish)
Made with magic snow powder, it has a cold, snowy, and slightly gritty texture. It’s perfect for sensory play that’s cool and satisfying.
Thick and glossy slime (GETO Slime Line)
Bouncy, shiny, and great for bubble pops and poking. These hold their shape and feel oh so satisfying to stretch.
We’re also dreaming up new textures for future drops. Clay slime, clear slime, and jiggly slime are all on our wishlist. Can’t wait to see what kind of sensory joy we can create next.
🌈 Sensory play isn’t just play
It can help kids:
Regulate big emotions
Increase focus
Wind down before bed
Transition between tasks
Build fine motor skills
And honestly? Grown-ups benefit too. Many of our customers tell us they keep slime at their desk as a fidget, or reach for it during anxious moments, or just enjoy it as a small joy in the middle of a busy day.
👇 What’s your texture match?
Take a minute to notice how you or your child respond to different textures. Do you love light and fluffy? Thick and juicy? Soft and smooth? You might be surprised which ones become favourites.
Not sure where to start? Thick and Glossy is a great beginner slime.
Want to take it further? Set up a texture bar at home with a few different slimes and let the kids explore. Add tools, beads, or scents to take the experience even deeper.
And if you do, tag us @slimeministernz. We love seeing your texture experiments in action.

The Power of a Simple Fidget
Fidgets aren’t just a bit of fun (though they are that too), they can be a real game-changer for sensory kids. They give busy hands something to do, help ease anxious energy, and offer a gentle, hands-on way to stay calm and focused when the world feels a bit too loud.
At Slime Minister, our son has been especially drawn to two Joybox favourites:
⭐ Star Fidget ($8): Defo a volcano and NOT A STAR according to our son
🔁 Round Infinity Fidget ($7): A great size and shape for little (and big) hands
Paired with our slime, fidgets like these offer dual sensory benefits: stretchy, scented textures in one hand, and soothing motion in the other. It’s a powerful combo for neurodivergent kids, or anyone who needs a bit of calm in their day.

Spring Into Sensory Play: Fresh Slime Ideas for a New Season
Spring is finally here, and with it comes that fresh, fizzy feeling that makes you want to open the windows, reset your space, and try something new. At Slime Minister, we love marking the seasons with sensory play that taps into the textures, colours, and scents of what's around us. Spring is the perfect excuse to lighten things up, literally.
Here are some ways to bring a little spring magic into your slime play this season:
🍍 1. Choose bright, juicy colours
Think lemon yellows, coral pinks, and lush greens. Our Tropipop, Pash’n’Pine, and Apple Whip slimes are all perfect choices for spring — fruity, fresh, and full of colour.
🌸 2. Add florals and sparkle
Decorate your slime station with daisy cutters, floral sequins, or a sprinkle of biodegradable glitter. It doesn’t take much to turn an ordinary slime sesh into a spring sensory garden.
🧼 3. Spring-clean your senses
Use slime play to wind down after school or switch gears on a busy day. Our Cool Whiff feels and smells especially light and satisfying this time of year.
🌱 Bonus: Create a Spring Sensory Table
Grab a tray or shallow bin and set it up with items from around the house or garden. Try:
A few small pots of herbs or flowers
Wooden scoops or silicone cups
Dried petals, citrus peels, feathers, or felt balls
One or two slimes with bright colours or soft scents
Let kids mix, pour, squish, and create their own spring world. This kind of open-ended sensory play encourages focus, calm, and heaps of creativity.
Whether you're a family just starting to explore sensory play or a seasoned slime lover ready for a seasonal refresh, spring is the perfect time to lean into new textures, playful colours, and the pure joy of squish.
Tag us on Facebook and Instagram @slimeministernz with your spring setups, we’d love to see what you create.

From Soap to Slime: My Ever-Evolving Creative Journey
What started with soap and candle stalls over a decade ago has grown into a colourful creative life built around design, motherhood, and sensory joy. This is how I went from Camille Co. to Design by Cheyney to Slime Minister.
If you’ve been following Slime Minister or Design by Cheyney for a while, you probably know that I live, breathe, and dream creativity. I always have. But my journey here hasn’t been a straight line. It’s been full of colour, chaos, detours, and drive, shaped by motherhood, instinct, and a deep need to build things that feel like me.
Over a decade ago, after moving back to Aotearoa from Canada, I started my first business baby: a soap and candle brand called Camille Co. The spark came from working in a boutique in Fernie, British Columbia, run by one of the most inspiring women I’ve ever met. Shout out to Chan at Freyja, who still runs her store to this day. Watching her do business with so much care and creativity gave me the push I needed to start something of my own.
Camille Co. took me to weekend markets, and I fell in love with that world. I loved chatting to locals, swapping with other stallholders, and turning my little table into a full sensory experience. Because I have a background in graphic design, I also did all my own branding and packaging. People started asking who made it. When I said “me,” they’d ask if I could do theirs too. So I started taking on design clients on the side.
Eventually, that side gig grew bigger than the soaps and candles. I wrapped up Camille Co. and stepped fully into design under Design by Cheyney. At first, I was working with clients on logos, branding, websites, and anything visual. But my end goal was always creative freedom, so I started making and selling digital assets like templates, brand kits, and illustrations. That way, I could keep creating without being tied to deadlines or feedback loops.
In 2020, I ticked off a huge creative dream. I had my first children’s book, Thank You for Feeding Freckle, published with Five Mile. It was a perfect fit. Storytelling where I could control the final product and see it come to life exactly how I imagined. That’s my favourite way to work. Fast, independent, and fully in the driver’s seat.
In 2021, our son was born and life shifted again in a huge way. Thankfully, selling my digital products on Canva meant I could step back from client work and focus on being a stay-at-home mum. But of course, the creative ideas never stopped.
These days, I work part time as Design by Cheyney, creating for my Canva store and Spoonflower shop. I’m also writing more children’s books in the background, heavily inspired by our son, so if you have publishing contacts, feel free to send them my way. And of course, there’s Slime Minister, the sensory joy project that started with him and grew into something so much bigger.
I’m behind all things visual at Slime HQ. The branding, website, social media, photography, packaging, slime colours, and even the scents, which link all the way back to my Camille Co. days. I’m the fast and instinctive one in our household. If I get an idea, it’s happening. Ikr is always telling me to slow down, but my brain doesn’t do slow. I create like a maniac and I love it that way.
So that’s me. A mum. A creative. A children’s book author and illustrator. A pattern-obsessed designer. And cofounder of a very gooey, very joyful slime brand. It’s been a winding path, but every step has brought me closer to the life I want, one where creativity leads the way.

Creativity Lives Here: Meet Ikr from Letra Luna
When he's not mixing slime or chasing our toddler, Ikr is creating something a little louder. Meet the guitarist behind Letra Luna and see how music, family, and sensory joy all blend together in our creative life.
At Slime Minister, we’re all about celebrating creativity. Not just in the slimes we make or the playful content we share, but in how we live, parent, and dream together. Our household is full of colour, sound, texture, and music, and for Ikr, it’s the music that runs deepest.
When we’re not mixing slime, packing orders, or literally running after our son, you’ll usually find Ikr with a guitar in his hands (or air-guitaring during a serious conversation, which, yes, drives me a little bit up the wall). But it’s also a glimpse into his inner world, where sound is always swirling and creativity is quietly at work.
Ikr is the guitarist for Letra Luna, an alternative metal band that formed in September last year. The band is made up of four incredibly talented Filipino musicians: Ikr on guitar, Jerika on vocals, Matt on drums, and Teri on bass. Ikr and Teri go way back to their days in a previous band called Fuego. After a lineup shift, they reformed into something new. Letra Luna’s sound pulls from nu-metal, hardcore, grunge, and pop. It’s gritty and raw, but still melodic and full of feeling. It’s music that tells a story, just like we try to do in our slimes.
They’ve got a gig coming up on Saturday, August 23 at Ding Dong Lounge, playing alongside Doom Scroll and If It Bleeds. If you’re into live music and want to support some wildly talented local musicians, come along and bring some friends.
A few weekends ago, the band came over to record some new material at our place. Ikr is also a trained sound engineer, so he’s the one behind the mixing desk, tweaking every tiny detail until it sounds just right. That’s one of the things I’ve always admired about him. He can disappear into the process, noticing layers and frequencies most of us don’t even hear. He brings that same thoughtful precision to Slime Minister too, whether it’s obsessing over the sound a slime makes when it’s stretched, or figuring out how to capture those sounds in our videos. He’s slow, deliberate, and deeply focused. I’m the total opposite, but that contrast is what makes our little business, and our life together, work.
We believe creative energy should be encouraged, shared, and lived out loud. Slime Minister started as a way to bring sensory joy into homes, but it’s also become a space for us to bring our whole selves, noise, colour, mess, and all. Whether it’s designing a label, mixing a scent, recording a reel, or mixing an actual song, we’re creating together every day.
I’m so proud of the music they’re making, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
👉 Follow Letra Luna on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with their shows, music releases, and recording adventures.
Until next time,

The Power of Sensory Play: What We’re Learning (and Loving) at Slime Minister
Sensory play is essential for neurodivergent kids, supporting regulation, focus, and development. We explore this through our son's experience with We Are Equal’s sensory kit and share how slime fits into the wider picture. Thoughtful tools, lived experience, and New Zealand-made support — it’s all here.
At Slime Minister, sensory play is more than just something we make, it’s something we live. As a family-run business in Aotearoa with a neurodivergent child at the heart of it all, we know first-hand how powerful the right sensory tools can be. Slime is obviously one of our favourites, but it’s only part of the picture when it comes to helping our son regulate his body, emotion, and energy.
Recently, we were lucky enough to receive a sensory box from We Are Equal, a beautiful new New Zealand business. Inside were Montessori-style stacking stones in bold, bright colours, a chew necklace, a sensory shaker bottle, a see-through shimmery cloth, a fidget bar, and worry stones. Our son gravitated immediately to the stacking stones and chew necklace. These kinds of tools aren’t just for kids, they offer comfort and support to anyone who needs a moment to ground themselves.
Supporting sensory needs is complex. Our son is mostly a sensory seeker, he loves deep pressure, texture, and movement, but there are also things that dysregulate him. Spinning or bouncing on the trampoline, for example, can tip him over the edge. Hanging, stretching, and squeezing tend to bring calm. This is why variety matters. Sensory tools are not one-size-fits-all. What works for one child, or even one day, might not help the next. Having a toolkit to choose from gives our kids options and autonomy, and it helps us respond to their needs in real time.
Sensory play builds brain-body connections. It supports focus, emotional regulation, fine motor development, and a stronger sense of self. Slime is one of those tools that ticks so many boxes. It’s playful, tactile, endlessly engaging, and helps bring our son back into his body when he’s feeling scattered.
We’ll be proudly linking to We Are Equal when Sarah launches her website. It’s businesses like hers, grounded in lived experience, thoughtfulness, and care, that remind us how many ways there are to support our tamariki. We’ll always champion fellow New Zealand makers in the sensory space, and we’re so glad to have connected with her. Follow We Are Equal on Instagram here and watch this space!
Messy Rainbows & Slime Dreams: A Sensory Adventure at Adventure Alley
There’s something magical about finding people who just get it. The joy of sensory play, the power of inclusive spaces, and the importance of meeting kids exactly where they’re at. That’s why visiting Messy Rainbows at Adventure Alley felt like a big warm hug wrapped in colour and kindness.
Run by the powerhouse that is Carlie, Messy Rainbows is a creative, sensory-based business that’s proudly neurodivergent-affirming. From calm corners to messy masterpieces, her setup is designed with care and intention, a space where kids (and adults) can explore, regulate, express, and connect.
It’s perfect for curious little minds to dig in, get messy, and follow their sensory joy, and even better for parents who’d love to let someone else’s parent handle the cleanup (thanks Carlie, you legend).
We felt so at home in the chaos (the good kind) where gooey textures, glitters, and colour play all had a purpose. It reminded us so much of why we do what we do at Slime Minister: to make space for sensory joy, one whiff and squish at a time.
And now? We’re dreaming up ways to join forces. Because when two sensory-loving minds come together, you never know what creative mischief might happen.
Do you have ideas for how Messy Rainbows could collaborate? We’d love to hear them. Drop us a DM or comment below, nothing’s too messy or too wild ✨
Check out Messy Rainbows on Instagram and show them some love. Trust us, your nervous system will thank you.

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean your play needs to freeze up. Slime is the perfect indoor sensory play for winter. It’s hands-on, low-mess (mostly, if you play on a hard surface), and cosy creative. Whether you’re curled up at home, hosting a rainy-day playdate, or looking for ways to keep your sensory seeker engaged while the weather does its thing, we’ve got your slime inspo sorted.
❄️ 1. Ambrosia but Make It Icy
Inspired by the classic Kiwi dessert, Ambrosia Dream is part of our Good Enough to Eat (But Please Don’t) range. Chill your slime (literally!) in the fridge for a few minutes before play. The cool texture adds a whole new sensory layer, and the soft pastel swirls are giving major winter dessert vibes.
Pro tip: Add small white foam beads for a “snowberry” effect.
🌬️ 2. Cool Whiff: The OG Winter Scent
This bouncy, fluffy OG slime smells like a fresh breeze and plays like a dream. It’s the one for stretching long, frosty ribbons and swirling up ASMR magic. Think icy mornings, misty windows, and quiet, but in slime form.
Want to turn it into a winter sensory activity? Try:
Adding a few drops of safe glitter (silver, white, light blue)
Pairing with soft textures (fake fur, cotton balls) in a tactile tray
Playing while listening to rain sounds or a lo-fi wintery playlist
🔥 3. Winter Warm-Up Station
Create a “Slime & Story” corner at home:
Choose a warm-toned slime like Vanilla Berry Puff or Goody Gloop
Set up an audiobook nearby
Offer soft blankets and warm tea for grown-ups (consider a Flat White slime for the coffee lovers)
Let kids squish and stretch (on a hard surface) while listening
This setup is amazing for calming down after a big energy moment, or for quiet weekend mornings when the wind’s howling and nobody wants to get dressed yet.
🌧 4. Sensory Tray Setup
Slime suggestion: Apple Whip
Place a pot of slime in a tray alongside warm rice, smooth stones, shells, or fabric. Kids can mix and match textures, creating sensory contrast with winter-themed items like pinecones, leaves, or pebbles from the garden.
✨ 5. Slime Spa
Slime suggestion: Cool Whiff or Vanilla Berry Puff
Perfect for adults and teens. Pair slime play with a face mask, herbal tea, and chill music for a winter wind-down ritual. Yes, this is your permission slip to make slime part of your self-care routine.
🎨 6. Colour Mixing
Slime suggestion: Any 2 OGs
Ask: what happens when you mix your slimes together? Let kids predict before they blend. Blueberry Cupcake + Vanilla Berry Puff? Pash’n’Pine + Apple Whip?
👣 7. Slime Puddles & Footprints
Slime suggestion: Blueberry Cupcake
Flatten slime into a puddle, then press in LEGO feet, tiny animal toys, or even clean gumboot soles. What kind of creature left that trail? Make up a story together!
🎬 8. Slime Movie Night
Slime suggestion: Any slime!
Settle in with a movie and a pot of slime. Let kids squish quietly while watching, great for fidgety winter evenings. Bonus points if the slime matches the film (Cool Whiff for Frozen, anyone?).
🧼 Keep it Clean, Even in the Muddy Months
Winter = mud, wet socks, and endless washing. Slime doesn’t need to add to the mess. Quick reminders:
Clean hands = long-lasting slime
Keep lids tight between play
Washable surfaces only (no couch slime!)
Our Consistency Controller can fix slime that’s too sticky

Behind the Batches: Late-Night Slime Time, One Whiff at a Time
Ever wondered how Slime Minister slimes come to life? Meet the late-night dream team (Cheyney and Ikr) and peek inside our kitchen-turned-squish-lab. From scent blending to squish testing, here’s how each OG slime is handcrafted — plus tips for keeping your slime fresher for longer.
Mix Master Mike keeping the vibes on point, our decorated $5 mixer from Trademe!
What do you get when a graphic designer and a musician get their sensory kiddo to sleep and walk into a kitchen at 7:30PM? You get Slime Minister's Slime Lines.
Welcome to a little peek behind the batches.
While the rest of the house is winding down, slime time starts after bedtime. Once our son is tucked in and the dishwasher’s humming, you’ll find Cheyney and Ikr in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, hands in slime.
Cheyney: Chief Whiff & Colour Queen
Cheyney’s in charge of the scent journey and the colour vibe of every slime. She’s got a nose for nostalgia and a palette tuned to joy. From the marshmallow-milky Vanilla Berry Puff to the zesty brightness of Pash’n’Pine, every Slime Minister scent is mixed and matched with care and a little cheek. The goal? To make your nose do a double-take and your heart feel a bit younger.
Ikr: Texture Technician & Squish Boss
Ikr’s the reason your slime feels so good. He’s the one testing the stretch, the pop, the fluff, and yes, the squish factor. He dials in the glue-to-activator ratio with mad scientist precision and is constantly improving how much air goes into a swirl. Texture isn’t just a detail here, it’s the whole experience.
Our Process: Small Batches, Big Energy
We hand-make each batch in small runs so we can keep quality high and creativity flowing. It’s a late-night operation powered by our Spotify playlist and fuelled by curiosity.
Every slime goes through at least three rounds of testing, including by our very own in-house product tester (a.k.a. our son), who brings his honest opinions and big reactions to the table. If it doesn’t pass the squish test or makes a mess we wouldn’t want to clean up at midnight, it doesn’t make the cut.
PSA: Slime Isn’t Forever — But You Can Help It Last
We wish slime could live forever, but like fresh bread or good bananas, it has a shelf life. Typically, you can expect about 1–3 months of prime squishiness, depending on how it’s cared for.
Here’s how to make your slime last longer:
Clean hands, always — Oils and dirt can break down the slime over time
Clean play surface — Keep the grit and fluff out
Store it airtight — Lids on tight, no air gaps
Keep it cool — Room temperature is ideal (not hot cars or fridges)
Give it a spritz — Our Consistency Controller can help control the consistency, if it gets too sticky
If it’s getting sticky or stiff, don’t panic. Check our FAQs for how to bring it back to life.
From Our Kitchen to Your Hands
Slime Minister isn’t mass-produced. It’s late-night joy, stress relief, sensory magic, and a whole lot of squish packed into a pot. Thanks for being part of our slime story. If you’ve got an idea for a new scent, we’re all ears. Tag us in your slime time pics: on Facebook and Instagram @slimeministernz
Stay gooey,

Creative Parenting: Raising Kids with Imagination, Not Just Instructions
In a world full of routines, rules, and responsibility, it can be easy to lose the magic of childhood, and sometimes, parenthood too. But what if your kitchen table could become a slime lab? What if your lounge was a sensory zone? What if parenting didn’t always feel so… serious?
Welcome to the wonderfully weird world of creative parenting.
What Is Creative Parenting?
Creative parenting is less about being crafty, and more about being curious. It’s about turning the everyday into play, inviting your child’s imagination to lead, and saying “yes” a little more often (even if it means a glitter explosion on the carpet).
At Slime Minister, we live this every day, not just as a business, but as a family. Our home is full of sensory tools, spontaneous projects, and moments that don’t always make sense (until they do). Whether we’re testing a new slime or building a cardboard city, we’re parenting in a way that’s messy, mindful, and meaningful.
Why Creative Parenting Matters
It builds connection: Play is how kids process the world. When you join in, you enter their world instead of pulling them into yours.
It supports neurodivergent kids: Sensory play, flexible routines, and open-ended activities are powerful tools for kids who experience the world differently.
It fosters problem-solving: Creative parenting encourages experimentation and resilience, not perfection.
It brings joy back to parenting: Letting go of the “shoulds” makes space for delight, silliness, and surprise.
How Slime Helps
Slime isn’t just squishy fun, it’s a gateway to creative parenting. It’s hands-on, sensory-rich, and totally open-ended. There’s no “right way” to play with it, which makes it perfect for:
Calming big emotions
Encouraging fine motor skills
Creating little moments of connection
Breaking the screen-time cycle
You don’t need fancy supplies or Pinterest-level energy. One blob of slime and an open mind is all it takes.
5 Easy Ways to Try Creative Parenting Today
Say yes to the mess (sometimes) — Embrace play that’s tactile, wild, or unpredictable.
Ask “what if?” — “What if this slime had a superpower?” “What if you were the mayor of Slimeville?”
Let them lead — Follow their curiosity instead of steering the activity.
Create, don’t correct — Focus on expression, not outcomes.
Join in — Get your hands messy, too.
From One Creative Parent to Another
As a mum, designer, and small business owner, I’m not here to pretend I’ve got it all together. But what I do have is a home full of sensory magic, a kid with wild ideas, and a deep belief that creativity is one of parenting’s most underrated tools.
So here’s your permission slip: be silly. Be curious. Be weird with your kid. It might just be the most important thing you do all day.

Slime, Brains & Bots: How We're Using AI to Stir Up Creativity
When you run a small business that's equal parts glitter, goo, and good vibes, there's a lot on your plate. Designing products, writing captions, packing orders and wrangling one little ball of energy (our son), all before the second coffee. So when AI tools like ChatGPT popped onto the scene, we were curious.
Can a robot really help write for a brand like Slime Minister? One that’s built on sensory joy, playful puns, and lots of heart?
Turns out: yes. With a few conditions.
We use ChatGPT to help spark ideas, speed up writing, and keep our brains from melting when the mental load gets too heavy. The magic happens when we blend it with our own voice, not replace it. AI might help generate the bones of a blog post or caption, but the sparkle? That still comes from us.
Just like slime, AI is what you make of it. You can shape it, stretch it, and remix it to suit your needs. And just like sensory play, it’s strangely soothing when used with intention. (Cue the brain image with purple slime topped with a bow, which yes, we prompted with ChatGPT).
We're also big on disclosing when we’ve used AI. As a graphic designer (Cheyney here 👋), it’s obvious when something’s a little too “machine-made.” But in the spirit of curiosity and creativity, we’re using Slime Minister as a playground to test what this tech can do and how it can support a small, creative, values-driven businesses like ours.
So next time you see a post from us that’s extra smooth or weirdly on point? There’s a chance ChatGPT helped us write it. And we’re not mad about it.
💬 Got thoughts on AI in creative biz? Drop a comment. We would love to hear how you’re using (or avoiding) it!
Matariki Magic: Stars, Slime and a Sprinkle of Surprise
As the stars of Matariki rise in our winter sky here in Aotearoa, it’s the perfect time to reflect, reset and squish some slime!
Matariki is a special time in the Māori calendar that marks the Māori New Year. It’s all about connection, remembrance, celebration and looking forward with hope. Traditionally, whānau would come together to share kai, tell stories and honour those who came before.
At Slime Minister, we’re all about sparking joy and connection too. To celebrate Matariki, we’re adding a little stardust to our shop. Pop a $2 Lucky Dip into your order and you might just score some celestial magic in the form of tiny stars. It’s our way of adding a little twinkle to your sensory play.
While you're here, don’t miss our uniquely Kiwi slimes. Try Ambrosia Dream - fluffy, fruity, and just like the nostalgic dessert, minus the cleanup. Or grab Goody Gloop for a jelly jube throwback that smells like every childhood birthday party rolled into one tub.
So whether you’re lighting candles, sharing kai or just enjoying the sparkle of the season, we hope you have a safe and happy Matariki.Shop small. Shop local. Shop New Zealand Slime.
Slime Minister slimes are proudly batch-made in Aotearoa, for sensory seekers across NZ and beyond.
